Dunmore vs Valley View Football Rivalry

On Oct. 23, 2009, at Dunmore, Dunmore won 35-14 and wrapped up its first Lackawanna Football Conference Division II title since 1999. The story had Dunmore No. 1 and Valley View No. 8, and the Bucks No. 2 in Class AA in the Harrisburg Patriot-News. Dunmore was 8-0. The story called the night a second straight test after an overtime win over Scranton Prep the week before. Morgan Holmes, a junior defensive back, intercepted three passes and forced a fumble on Valley View's first possession. Michael Perry recovered it. Six plays covered 21 yards, and Perry scored behind a block from 315-pound Joe Sabia. An intentional-grounding penalty left Valley View punting from its 8. The punt went 32 yards, and five plays later Perry scored again. It was 14-0. Shane Gensiak hit Brian Kubilus for 47 yards, then Brian Lalli for 8 and a touchdown. Passes of 10 yards to Kubilus and Kelly Swift set up Swift's 8-yard run that tied the game. In the third quarter Holmes intercepted a tipped pass, his second of the night. Dave Olivetti found Brian Copeland three times for 38 yards, and Perry scored his third touchdown. Perry finished with 95 yards. The story that night put his career total at 6,043 and called him the second area back to pass 6,000 yards. Valley View drove from its 12 to the Dunmore 22. Gensiak hit Kubilus twice for 33 yards. Ben Goldman and Tom Dailey tackled for no gain, and Tim Brier forced an incompletion on fourth down. Seven plays later Olivetti ran 55 yards down the left sideline for the clinching score. Holmes finished it with a 29-yard interception return with less than a minute left. Olivetti threw for 67 yards, 38 of them to Copeland. Valley View had come in on a three-game winning streak. Coach George Howanitz said the turnovers decided it, and that his team could have quit when it was 14-0.
