DUNMOREBUCKS

Jake Sawka

Center and tackle · 2015-2018 · Springfield

On Aug. 25, 2017, at Veterans Memorial Stadium, Dunmore center Jake Sawka threw two blocks that sprung quarterback Gavin Darcy for a pair of short touchdowns in the third quarter. The account says those blocks provided a 21-12 cushion. Dunmore won 28-18 over West Scranton. Steve Borgia had returned the opening kickoff 86 yards. The Bucks ran for 248 yards on 49 carries, and Cristian Buckley had 112 of them on 22 carries. West Scranton led only 7-6 at halftime after Nick Gioia's 10-yard run. Darcy later threw a touchdown pass to Borgia on third-and-goal from the 8, and it was 28-12 with 5:44 left. Dunmore was 1-0. West Scranton was 0-1. Rocco LaCapra was out hurt, and Anthony Kashmer and Anthony Santarsiero filled in on the line.

Sawka was a four-year starter for Dunmore. The Jan. 24, 2019 account lists him at 6-foot-0 and 285 pounds, a center who moved to tackle that fall after an early-season injury, and says he played both ways once he returned. In his career the line in front of him helped Dunmore to four straight District 2 Class 2A titles. The same account has the record at 48-8 and two backs over 1,000 yards. He was headed to Springfield College.

The Aug. 19, 2017 preview says he started in the postseason as a freshman and was a second-team all-star the next season. On Aug. 18, 2018, going into a fourth season as a starter, he said the linemen in his grade looked to him and that he was trying to show them the way the Dunmore line had played.
